Planning for Long-Term Storage

There are moments in our lives where we are out of town or even the country for a long period of time, such as being overseas in the military, going on a mission in a foreign country and even for a vacation that is longer than the typical week trip. Being away from home for long periods of time can be very stressful because you are away from your daily, weekly and even monthly routine. You start to think about how you are going to deal with everything and get prepared before you leave, and then you have your storage unit that you need to worry about as well.

We have some ides to help you during this overwhelming time so don’t you worry. By following these tips and ideas, we can help you be prepared and make your storage unit one less thing you have to worry about while you are away.

Check On Your Storage Unit Before You Leave.

Check on your storage unit before you leave several times. When the seasons change you can guarantee that your valuables are safe, check on them at least four times a year. If you are leaving for a long period of time it is better to check on them before you leave. Since you will not be around it is good to just check up on your things:

  • Checking for crushed or sagging boxes and replace them if necessary. If you have free grocery store boxes chances are they will not hold up because they are not meant for storing things for a long period of time. You should replace those boxes with high quality boxes to prevent any damage. We have many different size and type of boxes available for you in our rental office. Our boxes a specifically designed to hold up during long periods of time and prevent sagging and crushing. As well as mildew.
  • Look in your storage unit for damaged and broken items. If you have to stack your boxes make sure something heavy is not on top and make sure heavy things do not fall over. Remove and dispose any broken things and re-stack and organize your storage unit to prevent that from happening again while you are away.
  • If you are going to be leaving during the hot summer months consider adding DampRid® to help get rid of the extra moisture and prevent mildew and mold from building up on your boxes.

Set Payment Reminders.

You may be away for a while and making our monthly payment may not be very easy to do. Set a reminder on your phone for the first of the month and set it as a recurring reminder. You can make your payment online through our payment portal by calling your property manager.

If you are out of state or even the country you can also send your payment through the mail. Just make sure you send it a week to four weeks in advance. Remember to send it with enough time for the rental office to receive it by the fifth of the month. One thing you do not want to worry about while you are away is late fees!

Set Up Automatic Payments.Making payments online

Most of our customers have their payment deducted automatically from their bank accounts or charged to their credit cards on the first of the month. You can set this up through your bank; many banks have this feature available. You can also opt for automatic payments with our property manager. Automatic payments are a good idea to make sure your payment is on time no matter where you are in the world.

Pay Several Months In Advance.

You may know the exact amount of time you will be away, if that’s the case you can prepay for that many months in advance. You can bring your payment into the office, mail it with the select number of months you want to pay for or through your online account. This is great because you can forget about the payments until you come back.

What happens if you end up being gone longer than planned? You need to make sure you take care of any future payments on time that have not already been paid. To avoid this, you can tack on an additional month or two just to be safe, or ask a relative to make your payment for you until you get back. You never know if you will be stuck due to flight delays and cancellations, or if your plans suddenly change. Have a plan in place for the unexpected.

By following these simple tips, you can rest assured that your storage rent will be handled and your belongings will be safe and secure while you are away. So go ahead and plan that trip or set sail on your adventure, and don’t worry about a thing!
