Do I Need To Check On My Belongings In Storage?

If you are a self storage customer, you may have asked yourself, “Should I check my belongings in my storage unit?” Or, “I wonder how often should I check on them?” Both are great questions that we can answer!

Once your storage unit is full and packed safely and appropriately, you may find yourself exhausted and just want to lock the door and walk away from it! But, you shouldn’t “set it and forget it,” as the saying goes. Clearly your possessions are important to you or you would have just thrown them away rather than storing them. In order to keep them protected and in good shape, you need to check on them from time to time.

We suggest visiting your storage unit once a month or once a quarter. When the weather changes, you should check in on your personal effects. The only way to know if something is amiss inside (like if boxes have fallen over or if something is crushing what is underneath) is to open the door and take a look around.

Come prepared to visit and adjust the items in your unit be bringing the following tools:

  • Packing tape – You may need to re-tape boxes as extreme temperatures may affect the adhesive quality of the original tape.
  • Dust cloth or rag – Let’s face it, concrete and metal create dust. Simply dust off your items when you visit to keep everything cleaner and help prevent long-term damage. You can also use a fine mist spray bottle with water if the water will not damage the surface of your belongings.
  • Cotton balls and essential oils – Essential oils on a cotton ball placed in the corners of the storage unit helps deter pests from making a home in your family treasures. By switching out the scent a few times a year, you will keep your valuables smelling great and keep out unwanted creatures. (Read a previous blog on pest prevention to learn more.)

Moving BoxDuring your routine check, you may find that a stack of boxes has toppled over. You probably need a higher quality box. Low quality boxes cannot withstand heavy weight. Or you may have stacked the boxes too high. Or the weight was distributed oddly and time just took its toll and the weight shifted causing everything to come falling down. If that is the case, you need to open each box and make sure nothing is broken. Throw away any damaged boxes and broken items. Then repack the items securely using bubble wrap or packing paper and place them into a new box if necessary. Our moving boxes are specially treated to resist mildew and they are crush tested. If you find any damage that is coming from a neighboring storage unit, such as liquids running under the wall and onto your items, contact the property manager immediately. This is a rare occurrence, but not impossible, and the property manager needs to be made aware in order to prevent further damage to your items and to resolve the issue with the other tenant.

Checking up on your items is easier than it sounds. The more often you do it, the faster you can accomplish the job.
